Wacom VS. XGL
In this corner, weighing in at about 2 pounds, the Wacom Graphire 4×5, and in this corner, the 400lb gorilla, X-G-L!!!!!
OK, seriously, my wife gave me an early birthday present (guess she couldn’t wait), the Wacom Graphire 4×5. It’s silver and oh so hot (you’d think my wife would be jealous). Anyway, the Kernel (2.6.15-23) detected it out of the box, as did X, but it didn’t work. Well, I should say, it worked, like a mouse, but it wasn’t detected by Gimp or Krita.
I spent an entire day trying to figure out why. Finally, I decided to go into my plain X session (I usually keep it running with ultra-light Fluxbox alongside XGL) to see if I could get it to work. Poof! It worked. Apparently XGL just doesn’t like Wacom. More people have experienced this same phenomenon.
Anyway, I’m loving its precision, the pressure sensitivity, and the overall feel. It’s almost like drawing on a piece of paper (in fact, sometimes I forget). Both the stylus and eraser work flawlessly. So far, I’m liking Krita more than Gimp when it comes to drawing and painting, whereas I prefer Gimp (and all of her pretty effects) for actually editing of my artwork.
I might post some samples soon, inshaAllah.

I’ve had mixed results with my Wacom tablet in Linux… The mouse works, as you said, but I’ve never really had great luck with Gimp getting things right off the bat. I’ve gotten it working with varying degrees of hair pulling.
I actually haven’t tried to configure it with XGL… Interesting observation… Now I’ll have to go frustrate myself by trying to see WHY it won’t work. Hee hee. Or maybe I’ll just install another distro! Hey, over a month with Gentoo. Gotta be a record.

OK, I thought that I was crazy. What’s the solution?
I’ve XGL and wacon run ok, but don’t run pressure.
I’m use for that xfce4.

I have an Nvidia card, so since I made the above post, I stopped using XGL. Nvidia has a built-in aiglx-equivalent 3d X-server component. My wacom tablet works just fine. As far as I know though, this issue has been fixed since X.org 7.1 even with XGL.
