Dapper Drake iBook Screenies
I figured it is about time that I let you see some more personal aspects of my life. So, here are some screen shots of my KDE desktop on my Apple iBook G4, running Kubuntu Linux 6.04 “Dapper Drake.”
The eye candy is rendered using EXA (an X.org 7.0 feature).
Here is a picture of it with some windows open.
Here is a picture of me running Mac-on-Linux, which, in the latest release, allows me to run Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger inside of a window, inside of Linux.

Hi, I’m wanting to eventually switch over to linux from Mac OS X Tiger but have been having trouble getting everything to work. I’ve been using Ubuntu but can’t get hardware acceleration (have a 12″ 1Ghz iBook G4). Ever thought of writing a “how-to” for how you got kubuntu and x11 7.0 working with hardware acceleration on the ibook?
If you ever do, please let me know!

When you say “hardware acceleration” do you mean 3D acceleration (for games and stuff), or are you referring to the desktop eye candy, which, on my iBook, is using EXA for 2D acceleration (that happens to look 3Dish)?
The 3D side is pretty easy, as long as you have something less than a Radeon 9500. As far as I know, the iBooks come with the Radeon 9200 Mobility. If you have that, you can have 3D by adding the Load “dri” to the Modules section and making sure your video driver is “radeon” and not “ati” in the driver section of xorg.conf. That should be enough in X11 6.8.2
For EXA, you’ll need 6.9/7.0 The only way I was able to get that was to get the latest, bleeding edge release, Dapper Drake. Breezy Badger still has 6.8.2 You can get the composite effects, but it has bugs.

Hey Adib,
Basically I want to play around with xgl and compiz. I’m downloading dapper drake flight 4 right now, should have it in an hour or so. Yeah, I’ve got the mobility radeon 9200 so will try the xorg.conf things you suggested.
