Muhammad Salah Case

Friday, October 13th, 2006

Muhammad SalahI haven’t heard the latest on the Muhammad Salah case, but here is an intriguing radio interview (MP3 format) of his lawyer.

After being imprisoned in Israel and tortured into giving a false confession, he is now standing trial for crimes based on the coerced confession, a clear violation of the U.S. constitution.

I taught his children a few years ago and know him and his family to be generous, kind, upstanding citizens. This is clearly a witch-hunt, and it is certainly no coincidence that the trial is starting so close to the congressional elections, when the republicans are in dire need of some “good news” about the “war on terror.”

Remember Your Imam: Ali ibn Abi Talib

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

AliOn the night that the Commander of the Faithful Imam ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) died, after having been stabbed with a poison dagger by the wretched Ibn Muljum, Ali’s son, Imam Hasan (peace be upon him), rose to deliver a khutbah, saying:

“Tonight you have killed a man on a night in which the Qur’an came down, a night in which Jesus the son of Mary was taken up, and a night in which Joshua the son of Nun, the champion of Moses was killed. By God, none of those who were before him are ahead of him and none of those who will come after him will overtake him. By God, if the Prophet sent him on a raid, Gabriel was at his right hand and Michael at his left. By God, he did not leave (at his death) gold or silver except for 800 or 700 dirhams, which he set aside for a servant woman.”

Imam ‘Ali was the first imam of the Prophetic household to undertake the office after the Prophet’s death and the fourth caliph of the Muslim Ummah to rule over it. He was the cousin of the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace), the first male to accept Islam, the husband of the most perfect woman to ever live, Sayyida Fatimah (peace be upon her), the champion of the Muslim army, the progenitor of wilayah, the most knowledgeable among the companions of the Prophet, the father of the leaders of the youths of Paradise (Hasan and Husayn), the executor of the Prophet’s affairs (wasi), the gate to the city of knowledge, the door to the house of wisdom, and the well from which the divine fountain of secret knowledge of Allah pours fourth to all awliyah.

Peace be upon you, Ya Abu Turab, the day you were born inside the Ka’ba, the day you died, and the day you will pour the sweetest beverage for the believers at the fountain of Kawthar.

Ball of fire

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

I was perusing a popular salafi site (just to see what type of information they had — and to check out their latest sufi-refutations), and I stumbled upon an intriguing fatwa, apparently from Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen, proving that the sun revolves around the earth.

His only argument is that the Qur’an mentions the sun moving, and thus he makes an assumption from those verses that the earth is stationary. But the fact that the sun moves is not indicative of its movement around the earth. The Qur’an clearly states that the sun has its own orbit and does not mention that orbit as being around the earth. Science now confirms this (although the Qur’an mentioned it 1400 years ago), that the solar systems revolve around the center of the galaxy.

There is also quite a bit of evidence in the Qur’an about the earth’s rotation on its axis and its revolving around the sun.

Dust on your doorstep

Hafiz grave“In your service I’m emptied, emptied of myself.
My soul is just the dust on your doorstep.
But I don’t offer my heart’s gold to just anyone—
The door to this treasure bears only your name.”

A marvelous book

Sunday, October 8th, 2006

ancient quranic text with kufic scriptIt never ceases to amaze me. When reading the Qur’an, especially during Ramadan, it is always like reading it again for the first time. Of course, in years past, I always read translations. To now read the Arabic just adds to the multidimensional depth of what I receive from Allah’s book.

It is both prose and poetry, simple and complex, relaxing yet invigorating, spiritually deep and yet practically applicable, historical and foretelling, small enough to fit between two covers and yet boundless in its knowledge.

It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (prayers and peace be upon him) said, “The best of you is he who learns the Qur’an and then teaches it.”

Remember the poor this Ramadan

Friday, October 6th, 2006

Malnourished african childIt is reported by the master of traditions, Al-Shaykh Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Ya’qub ibn Ishaq al-Kulayni ar-Razi (may Allah make his grave fragrant) that the sixth Imam from the Prophet’s immaculate household, Ja’far ibn Muhammad as-Sadiq (peace be upon them) said:

“Whoever satiates a hungry believer so that he is satisfied fully, neither a human being among people, nor a near-stationed angel, nor a divine Messenger knows how great his reward is in the Hereafter, except Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.”

Then he added: “Feeding a hungry Muslim is one of the means of obtaining forgiveness.” After that he recited the word of Allah, Almighty and Glorious: “Or the feeding on a day of hunger, of an orphan near of kin, or to the indigent (down) in the dust.” (Qur’an 90:14-16)

A Strange Kind of Freedom

Wednesday, October 4th, 2006

I’m hearing a lot of talk in the “open source community” about the BSD license (the new one) being more “free” than the GPL. One article in particular seems to state their case well.

Forcing the progress through a “forcefully viral” GPL is not freedom, it’s just that: FORCING the (supposed) progress.

The problem that I see with this is that the BSD license is indeed a more free solution for the individual. If a person takes BSD licensed code, he can do whatever he wants with it (change it, add to it, stick his logo on it) and doesn’t have to give anything back to the community. He can change the license to proprietary and sell it (and no one will ever know that it was once free).

If that same person took GPL code, he could still change it, add to it, and stick his logo on it, but he has to release the source code of his changes. Is this viral? Yes. Is it placing a restriction on the individual? Possibly. But freedom should not just be for the individual. It should not be based on an elitist system. Freedom should be for all people. If I take something free, I have an obligation to make it free for everyone else, not horde it for myself. It also protects the freedom of the individual. If I make something free, why should someone come along and be allowed to deprive others of the freedom I intended it to have?

I’m sorry, but the BSD license is a strange kind of freedom…a selfish freedom.

Khomeini’s poison pill?

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006

Picture of Ayatullah KhomeiniKaveh L Afrasiabi has written an enlightening article on AsiaTimes about the letter recently published by former Iranian President Rafsanjani. The letter highlights Ayatullah Khomeini’s decision to accept the UN-negotiated cease-fire with Iraq, effectively ending the Iran-Iraq war, despite Khomeini viewing it as a “poison pill.” He did it, his letter argues, for the future of the Islamic Repbulic, as it was in the best interests of the country.

Rafsanjani seems to be sending a message to current President Ahmadinejad that, were Imam Khomeini alive today, he would cease uranium enrichment and try to find some compromise with the world community.

Although I agree with Dr. Afrasiabi in principle, I think he is really begging the question.

After all, it was not Saddam Hussein’s unwillingness to rid his country of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) that precipitated his own political demise, but rather false information. That is important to note. After all, Iran having a peaceful nuclear program would not be enough for the US to invade (which is their actual goal, whether or not Dr. Afrasiabi admits it).

If they do build a strong enough case against Iran to invade, it will most likely be established on hearsay and out-right lies. Instead of Colin Powell delivering a 70-page packet of conjecture to the UN, it will be Condi, but the outcome will be the same. Even if Iran ceases uranium enrichment, the US will claim that they are still doing it secretly and are even closer to making a bomb than we previously thought. The rest will be media hype, but it will be enough to sway the gullible goofs in Congress to give Bush full authority to attack, and the American people will watch in horror as America enters a third war, even while in the process of losing the other two.

So the real question is, which pill will Iran swallow? The dignity pill or the humiliation pill? Either way there will be war. At least with the first pill, they can fight it with some remaining sense of self-respect.
