Choose your friends wisely

Saturday, September 10th, 2005

Yesterday, I saw an old friend for the first time in a couple of years. I’ve known him now for almost 10 years. SubhanAllah! Tempus Fugit. You can always tell if someone is really your friend. When you’re around them, you feel your iman increase. There is a certain force of attraction (like that of a moth toward a flame, not a man toward a woman) between friends like this. One source of light feeds another.

He has bartered three Arabic textbooks and a dictionary to me in exchange for creating a web site that will host his store selling these books. The books are called Arabic For All, and I am already very impressed with them. There is NO English in any of the books. Not a single letter. It might sound impossible to learn Arabic from it, but that is actually the best way to learn. It comes with CDs (containing MP3 files, which beats typical textbooks with Windows CD-ROMs that don’t work in Linux) that takes you through the book. I’ve started the first lesson and love it, alhamdulillah. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to start learning Arabic. The obvious requirement is that you know how to read Arabic at a beginning level.

Let my Turkey in…or else

Friday, September 9th, 2005

Here is further proof that most western “experts” understand nothing about Islam:

The Indepedent is carrying a story noting, “The Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, warned in a hard-hitting speech that snubbing Ankara’s hopes would give ammunition to Islamic extremists, while welcoming it into the EU would help avert a “clash of civilisations” between the Muslim world and the West. ”

Yes, Mr. Straw. I confess. Turkey is the highest country on the Islamic agenda, and Muslims want nothing more than Turkey in the European Union. Hello! Am I here right now? Come on, where’s the hidden camera?

Turkey = one of the most secular countries in the world.
European Union = kind of like the secular gentlemen’s club, complete with imported cigars and unlimited putting on the green. No, sorry, not interested.

It is amazing how much these people tend to beg the question. What is the question, you ask? Iraq. Where are most of the extremists right now? Iraq. What is the EU worried about? Turkey?

If the EU had any backbone, which it doesn’t, holding Britain accountable for the war in Iraq would be the top priority and the one thing that could “avert a “clash of civilisations” between the Muslim world and the West.”

Of course, I would be foolish to think that this diversion is some type of blunder. It is merely another dog being wagged.

Colored Bash

Wednesday, September 7th, 2005

When I first opened the terminal in Mac OS X, I noticed two things: 1. The fonts looked awful. They did not antialias the fonts. I’m sure many of the hardcore UNIX-heads prefer it that way. Well, I’m used to KDE (http://www.kde.org) Konsole, which has nice looking fonts.

2. Like all BSD (http://www.bsd.org/)s, it uses tcsh by default instead of bash. Not a problem for me because, when I installed KDE (http://www.kde.org), Konsole defaults to bash.

Oh, wait, that makes three things I noticed. The third thing is that the terminal had no color. There was no color-coded “ls” that I’m used to with Linux (http://www.linux.org). It turns out that, for whatever reason, Apple did not ship it with the color coding. So, I downloaded fileutils-4.1 and compiled it. That gave me the color coding, but how to enable it by default?

Someone’s blog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog) (sorry don’t remember who) told me to use an alias in the “.bashrc” file in the home directory (i.e. ~/.bashrc). A simple one-liner:

alias ls=”ls –color=auto”

Now, I have pretty colors. Seriously, it’s not just so it looks nice. It’s a lot easier to tell what is a folder and what is a file when the folders are blue. Also executable files show up in green.

Huzzah!

Freedom

Today is Labor day, so I have the day off. What a concept! This is one holiday that I can actually appreciate. I have no idea what I’m going to do today, though. I suppose I should work on OneUmmah.net a little and write some more of my book(s). I am also working on a web site for a good friend of mine.

There are also tons of books I want to read. Now one day is starting to seem like it’s not enough.

Lazy, Stupid Carsalesmen and BMV workers

Saturday, September 3rd, 2005

I just spent the last 1/2 hour at the BMV, which is, by the way, full of idiots. I wonder what the interview is like for someone who works there. No offense to those of you who are intelligent but couldn’t find work elsewhere. Unfortunately, that will not save you from the eternal wrath of working for the evil capitalist machine. The punishment is in the crime itself.

Anyway, the real culprit in this is Stanley Chevrolet, 5697 West Broadway, McCordsville, IN 46055. (317)-355-3000

These idiots did not tell us that we had to get our new car title from them. Today we went to the BMV to get one, only to be told that we had to get it from Stanley. So, we told them that, thanks to Hurricane Katrina, the rain had washed away our temporary plate. Stanley had told us that we could get a new one at the BMV. Well, the BMV chick, whose probably just one of the idiots I mentioned earlier, told us that we can’t get one from them.

So, I called the Stanley Chevy people, namely Jeff Farmer, and he went into this long sad-song speech about how usually the BMV will give you the temporary plate. And, “oh they didn’t tell you that you have to come here to get your title?” No, obviously! So, instead of just offering us a new plate, he goes on and on saying the same thing. Finally, he asked his owner to give us a new one, and the owner said OK. Now, good customer service would have been to do whatever he could to get a new one in the first place, even if it meant going to the BMV with us to make sure they either give us one or rectify the entire situation.

So, if you know what’s good for you, don’t bother buying a car from Stanley Chevrolet, if you are ever in the area. Do yourself a favor and find a place with better service. Allah is my Witness, and He is their Judge.
