The New Muslim World

Sunday, July 31st, 2005

Is this the time in which we are now living?

The Holy Prophet [s] said: “There will come a time for my Ummah when their rulers will be cruel, their scholars will be greedy and have little piety, their worshippers (will act) hypocritically, their merchants will commit usury and conceal the defects of their buyings and sellings and their women will be busy with the ornaments of the world. Hence, at this time, the most vicious of them will dominate over them, and their good doers will invocate but they will not be answered.”

No Eye Candy

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

My video card suddenly died on me today. No warning whatsoever. I don’t think I’ve even had it a year. Cheap thing. Take my word for it. Never buy a cheap Jaton video accelerator, even if it does have an Nvidia GPU on it. Go for one of the better more well-known brands with a better warranty.

So, I don’t have any composite drop shadows or transparency because I’m using an old ATI card that I had long ago, which still works unlike that cheap Jaton sorry excuse for a card.

Reform the Patriot Act

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

Here is a site that definitely deserves the attention of librarians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Librarian),
educators, and internet service providers.
ReformthePatriotAct.org (http://www.ReformthePatriotAct.org).

From the web site:  Under the Patriot Act, the government can:

* SEARCH YOUR HOME AND NOT TELL YOU FOR WEEKS, MONTHS OR INDEFINITELY (Sec. 213)* COLLECT INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT YOU READ, WHAT YOU BUY, YOUR HOTEL VISITS AND YOUR MEDICAL HISTORY (Sec. 215)* SEIZE BUSINESS AND FINANCIAL RECORDS (Sec. 505)* TRACK YOUR EMAIL ACTIVITY AND WEB USAGE (Sec. 216)

Orientation

Wednesday, July 27th, 2005

Everything is starting to come together now.  Here are some of the exciting new things we have going:

New TVs in every classroom
3 new Data Projectors
New iBook carts on the way

I've prepared an orientation for the students to the Media
Center.  It's meant to be interactive, with students answering
questions, but it still might be useful to view online.  So, here it is (../../../documents/studentorientation.html).
I made it in Open Document Presentation format (.odp) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDocument), the new standard,
but I've exported it to Flash (.swf), which I just discovered that
OpenOffice.org can do.  Enjoy!

I'm sure there's a lot that could be added to it, but I just wanted to share the idea.

Herbal Theft

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

“Stephen Knight says he had a horrifying experience. The San Antonio teenager called police to say he’d been robbed. He said men broke into his apartment, tied him up with Christmas lights, took a plasma screen TV, and also stole his marijuana.”

London Stockwell Shooting

Sunday, July 24th, 2005

It now seems that the man, who was shot by London police, supposedly in connection with the July 7 bombings, was, in fact, a completely innocent, unarmed man from Brazil.

The police have issued a statement of regret. This comes after the Mayor had endorsed the apparent “shoot to kill” policy that had been adopted by London forces. The policy has already claimed its first innocent victim, a man with absolutely no connection to the bombings.

Busy Week

Saturday, July 23rd, 2005

Cute ZahraI started back at work this week. That’s why I haven’t been posting much. It was one of those weeks. Wife got another fake tree for the house. I think it’s an obsession. The little issue has been acting cranky lately. Other than that, everything’s normal.

Getting Better

Friday, July 22nd, 2005

Things are getting better now, and I'm excited again.  My carpet
is still a mess, but there is hope.  I'm flirting with the idea of
updating the OPACs to SuSE (http://www.suse.com) 9.3, but I'm going to hold off until I get a
different computer table.

I have a Special Edition of our newsletter available online.  You can check it out here (../../../images/stories/newsletterspecial.pdf).  Viewing requires a PDF viewer such as KPDF, XPDF, or, if you prefer, Acrobat Reader.

First day back…

Tuesday, July 19th, 2005

…and I'm already wishing I could go home.  Sad isn't it?  I
arrived excitedly and with a smile on my face, only to find out that
the room had been flooded.  The carpet is still wet and
moldy.  It has an awful smell.  It's probably killing my
allergies.  I can already feel the tingle in my throat.

What a welcome.

Jihad and stuff

Monday, July 18th, 2005

I wrote an article for OneUmmah.net last night. It’s the first one I’ve written in quite some time. It’s called A second look at Jihad and Terrorsim. It’s one of those articles that just needed to be written. I’m sure I’ve made some mistakes, but with my limited knowledge, that is the best I could do for now. Insha’Allah, it will shed a little light on Jihad and clear up some of the misconceptions and outright lies that are being perpetrated by the media and enemies of Islam.
